Are you working smarter or harder?
Do you ever find yourself doing a job the hard way simply because that’s how it’s always been done?
Farming people tend to have a hardy attitude. We roll up our sleeves, get on with it and do what needs to be done. That “just get it done” mindset is invaluable when things get tough.
But sometimes, pushing through a tedious task isn’t the best way forward. It might be a sign that there’s a smarter, quicker or simpler way to do it.
When it comes to improving farm business efficiency, knowing when to stop and look for a better solution can be just as valuable as getting the job done.
Chances are, someone has solved the problem before
A task that’s hard, repetitive or frustrating can be a great starting point for improvement.
The world is changing quickly, and there’s a good chance that if you’re struggling with a particular task, someone else has faced the same problem.
Sometimes, the solution is already sitting in front of you. The software you use every day might have a feature you didn’t know existed. There could be an app that simplifies the process, a simple piece of equipment that saves time, or an AI tool that helps you find a better approach.
Even a quick conversation with another farmer or business owner might reveal a practical solution.
Of course, not every solution will suit your farming business. A new app might create more work than it saves, a cheap gadget might not last the distance, and AI-generated advice still needs to be checked. The key is to explore your options before accepting that a frustrating task has to stay frustrating.
Stop resisting change and start looking for solutions
This week, I’d encourage you to pick one small job that you find tedious or annoying.
It doesn’t need to be a major business improvement project. Start with something simple that takes up time, involves unnecessary repetition or regularly causes frustration.
Then ask yourself:
- Is there an easier way to do this?
- Does the software I already use have a feature that could help?
- Could an app, tool or piece of equipment simplify the task?
- Has another farm found a better way to manage it?
- Is there training available for software or programs that will you more efficient? You can complete online training in office efficiency at https://agrifocused.com.au/training/
A quick Google search or a conversation with a few friends might be all it takes to uncover an alternative.
The goal isn’t to adopt technology for the sake of it. It’s to find practical ways to save time, reduce frustration and make your farm business run more smoothly.
Small changes can make a big difference
Last week, I received an interesting question about bill approval and coding in a larger family farming business.
Rather than simply accepting the existing process, we put the question out to others and received a range of practical suggestions that could be implemented.
It was a great example of how questioning an everyday business process can lead to useful improvements.
Think about how many times a repetitive task happens over a year. Even saving a few minutes each time can add up. And if a better process also reduces mistakes or makes life easier for everyone involved, the benefits can extend well beyond the time saved.
What’s one job you could do smarter?
You don’t need to overhaul your entire farming operation to improve farm business efficiency.
Sometimes, all it takes is a few moments of frustration, a willingness to question the way things are done, and the initiative to look for a better solution.
So, here’s your challenge for this week: identify one annoying or time-consuming task in your farm business and spend a little time investigating whether there’s an easier way.
You might discover a simple improvement that pays you back for years to come.
